Optimum Utilization of High-Bandwidth ATM Data Links

Overview
The SSCOP/SSCF
software module is part of the Adax Protocol Software (APS) product
range. It provides a High-Speed Link for SS7 and can be used to
interface public high speed signaling networks or build optimal
high-performance communication links in private networks, using
any underlying high-speed data transmission technology.
High-Speed Benefits
The SSCOP/SSCF module creates high-speed links for SS7 when it is
used with the Adax ATM-PCI and cPCI boards. It does this by supporting
SS7 signaling over ATM at T1/E1, T3/E3, and OC3/STM-1 data rates,
providing a highly reliable transmission service to the signaling layer above it. MTP-2 is only defined for or 64kbps signaling links.
A new definition, called signaling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL),
defines the new high-speed link. Data transmission speeds are increased
to T1 and E1 rates and a simple migration path is offered to broadband
networks for SS7 applications. The future for Intelligent Networks
is ATM. As most telcos face increased signaling demand all that
is required is the substitution of the ATM board and SSCOP/SSCF
software for the existing Adax MTP-2 board and software. SSCOP delivers
optimum utilization of high-bandwidth data links and is backward
compatible with legacy MTP-3 software running over the Adax SS7
board and driver. Configuration flexibility is also possible because
High-Speed Links (T1/E1, T3/E3, OC3/STM-1) and standard 56/64 Kbps
links may be mixed in a single system.
Performance is in the Details
SSCOP/SSCF provides complete level 2 data communication control
for ATM-based SS7 conforming to the ITU and ANSI broadband SS7 standards.
This includes signal unit formatting into ATM cells (AAL5), enhanced
and efficient error recovery as provided by SSCOP, selective re-transmission
of rejected Protocol Data Units, error monitoring, sequence number
control (uses very large sequence numbers), link status control,
and monitoring of the underlying ATM link. SSCOP/SSCF can utilize
ATM AAL5 or HDLC as a transport.
The SSCOP (Q.2110) module is implemented
using SSCOP over the Common Part Convergence Sublayer and Segmentation
and Reassembly Sublayers of ATM Adaptation Layer Type 5 (AAL5).
Network Node Interface (NNI) connectivity is made possible by
using
SSCF (Service Specific Co-ordination Function) over SSCOP. This
provides faster service and extends the features available to
higher
protocol layers.
SSCOP and SSCF are independent parts
of the signaling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL). Together they form
the
equivalent of the MTP-2 Layer protocol in an ATM environment. SSCF
supports the User Network Interface (Q.2130) and is a Convergence
Sublayer that connects MTP-2 and MTP-3 by supporting the Network
to Network Interface (Q.2140). For users and developers, this
means
that the MTP-3 Interface, the management and control functions,
and the Intelligent Network applications all conform to industry
standards.
SSCOP/SSCF is designed to be modular.
This means that you can build a server from a single card up to
a multiport rack for the most demanding telecommunications applications
running combinations of Frame Relay, X.25, SS7/MTP-2, and SS7/ATM
simultaneously.
DLPI Support
SSCOP/SSCF is a standard UNIX streams module with an upper AT&T
DLPI interface specification for upper layer drivers. This architecture
provides for easy migration of MTP-3 and SSCOP/SSCF from MTP-2.
Operating System Support and Adax Protocol
Controllers
All Adax products are available for PCI, cPCI and PMC architectures,
supporting Linux and Solaris Operating Systems. VxWorks, HP-UX and
IBM AIX are also supported for certain products.
The SSCOP/SSCF software operates with
the following Adax products: ATM Controller for Real Time Voice and Video over AAL2; signaling and IP over AAL5.
Adax Software
Adax Protocol Software (APS) is a suite of products designed to
get the most out of each Adax hardware product and is supplied with
a set of common APIs enabling simple integration of the upper layers.
Adax HDLC, SS7, SCTP, X.25, Frame Relay, LAPB, LAPD and LAPV5 provide
a well-balanced, high performance, low overhead direct connection
to the network.
Fastest Time to Market
Adax provides extremely fast time to market through simplicity of
design and a modular product range. This common software interface
ensures a simple migration path and provides a flexible and portable
solution. The API’s between products remain the same preserving
the investment in the higher layer software and applications. This
compatibility enables quick upgrades to next generation requirements
and easy field upgrades to expand the capabilities of installed
systems.
